Sharing a taste of Ukraine at Riverside Gardens

Homeowners at Riverside Gardens in Knaresborough enjoyed a taste of Ukrainian culture when Duty Manager Elvira organised a special event inspired by the traditions of her home country.

The colourful celebration brought together Ukrainian food, traditional clothing and embroidery, music and stories, giving homeowners the opportunity to discover more about the country’s culture and traditions.

For Elvira, who moved to Yorkshire from Ukraine with her son Serhii in 2022, it was an opportunity to share some of the traditions and culture that are important to her.

Food, traditions and plenty of conversation

Among the foods Elvira shared was traditional Ukrainian honey cake, which proved particularly popular, along with salo, made from cured pork fat. She also introduced homeowners to the Ukrainian custom of welcoming important guests with bread and salt.

Traditional clothing and embroidery gave homeowners another insight into Ukrainian culture.

“Every region has different patterns and different meanings,” she said. “There might be flowers, but they are special flowers with a meaning, or there might be different colours. Ukraine has many different neighbouring countries, and every region has its own history and its own traditions.”

The event prompted plenty of questions and conversation, with homeowners keen to learn more about the traditions Elvira grew up with.
