Kempston retirement community raises funds for British Heart Foundation

Homeowners, friends, families and members of the local community came together at The Newells retirement community in Kempston on Saturday 5th September to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation. 

More than 50 guests attended the fundraising afternoon, enjoying a complimentary buffet lunch and drinks, alongside a charity auction, raffle and tombola. The event raised £852 for the British Heart Foundation. 

Among those supporting the event was Mayor of Kempston and The Newells homeowner Steve Conway, who attended in his official capacity as Mayor. 

Steve said: “I was very pleased to support this event and a charity that can make such an important difference to people’s lives. 

“The work of the British Heart Foundation means a great deal to me personally because I have lost a number of family members to heart disease. Supporting research, raising awareness and helping to give more people the chance of longer, healthier lives means a great deal to me. 

“As Mayor, I’m always pleased to see people coming together to support worthwhile causes, and it was especially nice to see that happening here at The Newells.” 

Tina Williams, General Manager at The Newells, said: “We had a wonderful afternoon and would like to thank everybody who joined us, donated prizes and helped us raise such a fantastic amount. 

“There was a lovely atmosphere, with homeowners welcoming friends, family and members of the local community to enjoy lunch together and support a very worthwhile cause. 

“We’re delighted to have raised £852 and are extremely grateful for everybody’s generosity.” 

Steve, 66, moved to The Newells with his wife Terri in May 2025. Both are long-serving Kempston town councillors and Terri is a former Mayor of Kempston. 

Steve, who was elected Mayor in May this year, is also Chair of Bedford Men in Sheds and remains actively involved in community life across the town.
